Barred OWl

A Barred Owl perched on the limb of a bigleaf maple, framed by the fronds of licorice ferns. A relatively new avian addition to North America’s West Coast. Here in British Columbia, Barred Owls were first detected during the 1960’s, having made a steady expansion across the continent. Since then, these prolific birds of prey have become abundant - unfortunately compounding the negative effects that myopic logging practices continue to impose upon their critically endangered western counterpart, the Spotted Owl, through both direct predation and eviction from prime breeding habitat.
