Fiery-throated Hummingbird

A dazzling rainbow display radiates from the gorget of a Fiery-throated Hummingbird - a species endemic to the mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama. Rather than pigmentation, this spectacular colour is the result of microscopic structures within the bird's feathers, intricate enough to interfere with light refraction. Often appearing a relatively drab green/blue, it's only at certain angles that this tiny bird explodes with colour.
