Sharp-tailed Grouse, Thompson Region, British Columbia, Canada

A male Sharp-tailed Grouse displays at traditional dancing grounds atop an esker in the grasslands of southern British Columbia. Gathering at sites known as leks, males from the surrounding area perform elaborate displays to secure mating rights. As seen here, their colourful eyebrows called superciliary combs and neck airsacs called apteria are inflated, and with wings extended, they call and stamp their feet rapidly.
