Sooty Grouse, British columbia

High above the valley floor, balanced on the limb of an Engelmann spruce, a male Sooty Grouse delivers his low hooting song to the expanse of forest below. Audible from up to two kilometres away, this far-carrying sound is a harbinger of the spring/summer season in the mountains of British Columbia. As creeks once arrested by ice start to flow and snowbound avalanche chutes melt and flourish with greenery, the steep mountain slopes begin to pulsate with the songs
of these charismatic birds.
