Chestnut-crowned antpitta, ecuador

Describing this family of birds as cryptic doesn't begin to describe their reclusive nature. In fact, it wasn't until quite recently that birdwatchers and photographers stood a chance of viewing these fascinating birds. Thanks to the patience of locals, who over time have earned their trust by way of daily worm offerings, a few Antpittas here and there will now reveal themselves, albeit for just a few brief moments. Before long, they're gone in a flash, hopping back into the dense undergrowth.
