Long-eared Owl, British Columbia, Canada

With the setting sun reflected in its luminous eyes, a Long-eared Owl mantles over freshly-caught prey. Photographed in a salt marsh on British Columbia’s Fraser River Delta. The dense cover and camouflage provided by a mass of hawthorn or crabapple branches works wonderfully to conceal these beautiful owls throughout the day. With a penchant for choosing the least photogenic sites to roost, I was thrilled with this fortuitous encounter!
