Surf Scoter, British Columbia
In winter, this flamboyant duck that breeds on lakes throughout the Boreal Forest becomes a gregarious, sea-going bird which gathers in large flocks at specific sites rich in mollusks. Along with their relatives: Black, and White-winged, Surf Scoters show an affinity for razor clams and mussels. Using their strong wings to propel themselves to the sea floor, they grasp their prey with a specialized bill.
