NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL FLEDGLINGS

BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) fledglings huddle together at a day roost in an Engelmann Spruce (Picea engelmannii) in the Interior of British Columbia, Canada. For the first several days post fledging, young saw-whets roost in close proximity, often clustered together in the same patch of young, dense conifers. As spring progresses and their flight skills improve, they become increasingly independent until eventually dispersing to their own territories, which may be hundreds of kilometres away.
