Not long after sunset, a female Northern Saw-whet Owl peers out from her nest in a Trembling Aspen. This cavity was originally excavated by a pair of Northern Flickers, partially healed over, then at some point was clawed at by a mammal (marks visible to the left of the owl) whose acute smell detected the presence of nestlings within. Old trees facilitate and tell so many stories for those interested in seeking them out!
